I just finished watching. Holy crap: there really is a reason this thing became so big. Despite the infamous rep that the Saw franchise has of being "torture porn," I would say this movie is much more of a psychological horror.
There are some IDEAS present that are gory, but they are really just tantamount to some spoken detail with very small clips to help sell the point.
The movie itself has very little gore. And even in one of the most difficult scenes near the end, the physical horror is perfectly accompanied with what was, for me, more of an adrenaline rush that I feel like makes you associate with the character more while dissociating from the pain and terror.
I actually already had read up on the plot of the film - it being a horror classic of the modern day, it had piqued my curiosity in the past - but even knowing the story ahead of time, I was basically hooked to the screen, wanting to see it unwrap.
Sure, it isn't like I had just read a synopsis yesterday, but still - I think this very powerfully shows what even the young James Wan director was capable of.
Not to mention the story he and Leigh Whannell came up with. All of it just works. I will give a warning for those who just don't like horror, especially horror that CAN tend towards gore or, to be more blunt, "torture.
Case in my point, my sister - who HATES horror but saw it around the time of release - still hates everything about it.
Also, I watched this without my wife, who probably wouldn't have liked it either for reference, IT Chapter 2 was a bit much for her, although she has been sensitive to anything with kids since our 2nd boy was born.
If you don't fall in this category of person, I wouldn't worry about the film being too "disturbing" or anything.
If you are a horror fan, I can't recommend this enough. Really, I can't. I loved this film, and if you have Prime, and can watch it free, take advantage of that!
This movie isn't gory, it doesn't show much physical torture, but more of the mental torture all of the characters go through.
This movie takes plenty unpredictable turns, and the ending all by itself is worth watching the whole movie.
If you're looking for a movie that messes with the characters heads, as well as yours, you've come to the right one. The first Saw, the movie that started one of the great horror-thriller series in recent history.
The story contained many of the elements that would make the franchise stand out. They were asked what were they willing to do to be free of their sins.
Things begin with two men photographer Adam Stanheight Leigh Whannell who co-wrote the story and doctor Lawrence Gordon Cary Elwes chained to opposite sides of a rundown bathroom with a dead man in between them.
Each one finds an envelope in their pocket with a cassette that says play me. When they listen to them they hear what would become the familiar voice of Jigsaw the man that kidnapped them.
The tape says that Lawrence has to kill Adam otherwise his family will die plus a riddle. This would be the basis for all the following Saw movies.
First, you had people trapped by Jigsaw. Second, he gave the prisoners instructions which they had to decipher. Third, the directions would include very painful choices which they had to make in a set period of time.
Fourth, Jigsaw acted as an avenging angel making his prisoners pay for some past transgression. It shows other people that were captured and what Jigsaw put them through along with the iconic Jigsaw mask and doll.
It was one of those closings that would stick with an audience for a long time and makes this release probably the best in the entire series because it was so new and unexpected.
One person found this helpful. This is a ground breaker horror film. The franchise is in the Guinness Book of World records for the largest horror franchise of all time.
That should tell you something. It's plot driven, stylistically crafted.
